Photoshop and Photographic skills: A conflict of polarities? ================================================================================ briankend on 24/02/2009 03:35:00 As a result, the Recycle Bin shrunk in size and money flows in galore. However, Photoshop also saves skin if used moderately; if there is an overflowing litterbin on the foreground of an otherwise beautiful landscape, it may save the scene by taking it off. So Photoshop is not the culprit; like, as always, it’s the human mind. A competent photographer just removes a flaw with it if it occurs at all, while there are some who use the software to cover up their respective incapability. But that’s a question on moral and ethics; we need to see deep into the temptations Photoshop sends out. Humans, previously, used their own feet to travel places. With the invention of the wheel, most made it an easy mode for transportation. It’s the same thing that’s now happening between Photoshop and photographic skills; even some of the best photographers are not focused enough nowadays to shoot flawless photographs; they know they can easily touch them up with an aid from the software. And if we go by the theory of Evolution, whatever that’s not used for the purpose it’s meant to be, gradually puts it out of the system. Therefore, while it’s absolutely justified to make use of Photoshop to add a bit of life to a shabby background or to put right the white balance in a photo taken on a cloudy day, it’s not when someone is careless enough for he/she knows there is someone to take care of everything. It's absolutely fantastic that Photoshop is here to correct all the photographic mistakes one may make. But question remains – Is it necessary to make the mistakes right in the first place? No; that way, you are on your way of forgetting everything that you learnt previously. Paying more attention to the shoot is more important than relying on some retouching mechanism. Some may argue that modern life is too fast to allow such amount of patience, but then again, it’s a sure shot way to miss out on the joy of camera-based creativity. But that’s fair for anyone who doesn’t mind becoming an image editor from a photographer and digital photography opened this avenue; so shall we think that photographer’s are now divided into to distinct groups – the digital photographers and the traditional film users? It seems so; therefore, if you want to hone your photography skills, stick to the age-old medium and save the extra time that you would otherwise spend in front of your copy of Photoshop; if you are just a point-and-shoot person, may Photoshop save you till that day someone with trained eyes expresses the doubts. Being a photographer, you must remember that Photoshop is meant to simply tweak an image so that good becomes excellent and not bad becoming ok. That way you shall restrict yourself within certain limitations, which may as well bar your entry from a contest that could have made you a renowned name in the photography industry.
